pain killers

. I have muscle pains all the time, i have had them for many years, have seen doctor many times, but pain killers are all that is prescribed. which i don't take unless pain is to the point of total distraction. , bit concerned how they work, as i had a mini stroke a couple of years ago and the mri showed narrowing of the arteries to the brain. I was told not to take ibrufen because it narrows the arteries ( I have high blood pressure) but does co-codamol etc have the same qualities? does it work in the same way?

percy.....I do't think that "painkillers" including Ibuprofen have anything to do with the narrowing of your arteries.
This is a generalised disorder of overweight, high BP and ageing.

Keep taking the pain killers to relieve your pain.

Do you know what is causing the muscle pain and have you tried anything like osteopathy, massage or accupuncture?

thanks squad, i try to avoid pain killers as i don't know what the are actually doing. Jenna,I have suffered with bad back pains ( and i mean " bad back pain") unable to stand straight and having to fall out of bed and slowly climb up to standing position, taking several minutes to get out of a car etc, but i always thought
( this is pain, but it is not a terminal illness, so get on with it) but after having a TIA/mini stroke tablets had me worried, so this is why i question if it is safe to take pain killers, as I can assure anyone that being paralysed down one side, even though it was only 20 minutes or so, is a real frightener,I wouldn't even sit in the same armchair for several months,it was sudden, just watching TV on a sunday night, and suddenly unable to move my left side, arm leg , anything.
picked up my arm with the other, working hand, and no feeling at all, just dropped it and felt nothing. you don't want to go there. I have come to the conclusion that musle/back/anywhere pains are not high in the list of doctors
concerns, and prescribing pain killers is an easy way out. i just must add, that just before i had the TIA, I had been prescribed some really strong pain killers, the doctor said they were almost as good as morphine, and for several nights i woke up at about 3 AM thinking how wonderful the world was, and everything was beautiful, and just lay awake in a really happy mood. This is why i worry about taking tablets.

Stroke aside percy ..do you think that it could be osteoarthritis in your back ? Is it your lower back ? Do you also get hip pain ?
If so ask your GP for an Xray to rule that in or out .

well killing pain is a good start!
Of course whether you take them is completely up to you, but it seems really odd to me that someone could be in a position such as yourself and NOT take painkillers

I have read that some people get pain relief from Tens apparatus which costs about £20 and delivers a pulsating, tingling electric shock (adjustable)
from 2 small batteries.
Some parts of the country also have "pain clinics"
My wife likes to take a hot bath to relieve her pain. Instead of taking hot water bottles to bed, she takes 2 wheat bags which can be heated up in the microwave for 3 minutes each. These used to cost £12 each on Amazon.

sorry to come back into this a bit late, but I do have a tens machine, and find that the pain generated from a tens machine does outweigh the bone/muscle pains, and it appears to last into the next day, but have just realised that the statins we were taking have been changed owing to cost, and now the oh is also suffering with bone/muscle pains, although mine go back years. I can only conclude that age is probably the biggest factor as pains come and go but all medicine stays relatively constant. going back to pain killers, yes i know they are for pain, but in my position could they could also be a killer?
As an aside, the pain has decreased to normal status, just unable to stand straight for a minute after sitting down, and unable to lift my arms above shoulder height without great pain. Don't get old, or even better, get private medicine.
