Vitreous Humour Detatchment

I have had problems with my vision in my left eye with flashing lights and spots I went to see the optician today and I was told that the vitreous humour, the jelly of the eye is coming away from the retina, and there is a higher chance of detatchment of the retina within the next few weeks. Has anyone else experienced this I am only 40 it was a bit of a shock to say the least.

Yes Gordie - Keep Calm And carry On!
Ive now had this happen in both my eyes. Fortunately the retinas have not detached but if this were to happen, the re-attachment is a simple laser procedure so do not be afeared.
I get a bit fed up with the side effects - lots of floaters, sometimes a smeary blob in field of vision, but it's important to stay positive. I avoid staring at blank walls, for example, as that just lets me see how many floaters I have. I do also swot non-existent flies, but that could be the booze....

Yes - a horrible experience. However, mine happened nearly ten years ago, and the optician keeps an eye on it (no pun intended!) - it's posterior vitreous detachment. http://en.wikipedia.o...r_vitreous_detachment

I have had it too. I had the laser treatment and 2 months on everything has returned to normal. Have you been to the hospital to see an opthalmologist?

I can confirm this also. Apparently more common in those who need glasses, so I was told.

I have had it, no big deal and luckily no retinal detachment.
I think 40 is quite young to have it though I could be wrong. I still have a larger than average black floater in right eye but as Mosaic says I don't stare at white walls! The brain adjusts to a degree anyway.

This happened to me a few years ago - I was walking round Tesco and suddenly I had a type of migraine headache, then, what I can only describe as an ink stain in my sight, came over my eye. I couldn't see and it really freaked me out. I left my shopping went straight home. That afternoon I went to A & E at Moorfields in London - they said it was a massive lump of vitreous jelly had came away in my eye. Fortunately there was no lasting damage. It is apparently quite common in short sighted people.

Me too! Mine has completely come away and apparently this is the best case scenario. I was really worried about Retinal Detachment too but as others have said it can be fixed. I think there is a degree of urgency though so if you spot any changes - get to your local eye hospital ASAP. Good luck :-)
