pains in leg

have terrible pains from buttock to foot on rear side of left leg. pins and needles on bottom of foot. unable to walk, been like it for three days, keeping me awake and unable to concentrate, too much agony if i try to drive the car, such is the pain.
Went to the doctor, he said it was a back strain and prescribed co-codamol and gave me the telephone number of a physiotherapist at the local hospital. called them, and there is a 9 week wait!!!! I sincerely hope it is better before that or i may top myself as the pain is horrendous, but at least its not terminal, so should just put up with it and think about the poor sods who are in pain and it will never get better. The doctor did suggest whisky was a good medicine, and that sounds good to me. ( this Doctor is not my usual one, this one is a jolly german chap, who calls you " mate" and when you leave says " see ya ") My sort of doctor.
Question is after all that, has anyone else had a similar problem, and how long did it last?

Oh! yes.........my type too.
9 weeks!!! I was referred to physio via rhumatology last Monday, got a letter through to ring for an appointment Thursday and they are booking in from a week Friday! Could you afford to see someone privately? A private physio/osteopath?
'' The doctor did suggest whiskey was a good medicine ''

What a stupid doctor, it sounds like Sciatica to me, I had the same 3 years ago and then I got damaged nerves in my foot.

If you can afford it I would try and see a private physiotherapist, which I did, cost me £30 a session, then saw the one at the hospital.

well sqad,
at least he's not like my normal GP, all doom and despair, and
" lets wait and see what the next blood test in 3 months time brings up" with my aneamia. I do like to feel that the doctor i am speaking to is on the same plane as me, not a million miles away from reality and the normal NHS patient who has a limited amount of money to spend. I really do think a doctor who inspires a bit of hope and happiness is worth his weight in gold to the patient, i think it may be true that people can worry them selves to death. many literate people have said things like " without hope, there is no future"
and after my wifes apparrant terminal cancer 20 odd years ago, (we just had dinner together, alive and kicking) i am sure that is correct.
Still got the leg pains, will have to go to bed so I can take the weight off of my legs, can't even sit down for long, but i must admit, a glass of whisky helps. But, it interferes with the co-codamol, gives me a burning stumach, so can't win.
Percy.
what a doctor!!!!
percy....fair enough!
Personally I like my doctors to be approachable/cordial but mainly knowledgeble, efficient and to the point. I would have no confidence in a doctor who called me 'mate' or any other endearing term. I don't want a mate, I want a doctor. I think I'm probably old fashioned in this respect.
Give the guy a chance! Actually, it is a problem for someone doing a job in a second language. My German OH calls people "mate" - sometimes inappropriately. He was making a business phone call the other day and I was writing notes and holding them up to him. "Don't use 'bloody'" for example. Sometimes he tells me I shouldn't use a certain word that I have picked up from friends, not realising it isn't that polite!
percy, you, your wife and i sound like we have had the same cr@p doctors in our life time.

I've had 3 separate illnesses with them telling me I'm a hypochondriac (for years) and it turned out to be serious all 3 times.

I'm now on my 4th and i think I've worked out myself what it is..

I hope your back gets better soon..
If you make a complete nuisance of yourself by phoning the physiotherapists daily to ask if there are any cancellations etc, you can sometimes get faster service.
It's not fair, I know, but those who shout loudest often get better /faster treatment.
Meanwhile, keep on with the tablets. Take them regularly as prescribed, don't wait until you cannot stand the pain any more.
I prefer your kind of Dr too.
Hope you feel better very soon.

Exactly and clean presentation dressed appropriately and with a tie.........never.....NEVER ....would they come on a ward round without a tie........and each member of staff addressed appropriately (even if you were sh@gging the ward sister)
oh dear sqad, ties are not considered appropriate any more
bednobs........neither am I........thank goodness.;-)
ties are said to be a carrier of bacteria from doctor to patient. Likewise watches, rings, etc.

btw percy I have suffered for years with sciatica and back pain. Went to a physio once and found it a waste of time and money. You just have to keep moving and work your way through it.
johny

Really?.......I don't buy that one little bit, in my opinions it is peoples hands that transmit the infections. How is is that nurses can go home and return to work in their uniforms, if clothes are a source of infection?

No......it is touching wounds with unwashed hands.....ties transmitting infection....b0llocks.
I am ok with cr@p bedside manner if the results are good...
Maybe the gp who said I think you have a brain tumour go home and wait for a call to see a specialist later today was a bit abrupt though he was wrong thank heavens

thanks for all the advice, really do need to sort something as this is stopping my life. unable to walk very much, driving a car is out of the question, awake most of the night, co-codamol seem to work for the first couple of hours in the morning, then pain back and further tablets have no effect. will try walking about a bit tomorrow and see if that helps, but now think I may have to ask my own doctor for something stronger, as laying in bed seems the only way to relieve the pain, and i have jobs to do for customers so thats not an option.
just as an aside, i called the hospital physio phone number this morning, in case there were any cancellations, and first time it rang and rang, no answer. second time, it rang and rang and an answerphone message came on, saying " we are only open between 9 and 12, monday to friday, there is no point in phoning at any other time as your call cannot be answered" I left a message
" it is thursday at 10 AM, could someone call me back please to confirm appointment" Still waiting.
About 10 years ago i had shooting pains in my leg that evolved into falling down when i stood up because my leg wouldn't work. Went to a chiropractor. 2 adjustments to my lower back per week for a month or two, and problem solved. I do yoga now to keep my back aligned, and it's never happened again.
