Just wondered if anyone could give me some advice on this before i take my son to his GP this week.
my son is 5 and has been a type 1 diabetic for 2 yrs now and also a diagnosed coelic. his diabetes is fairly well controlled now with his insulin doses and his blood sugars are pretty normal. and he is doing very well on a complete gluten free diet.
Since Friday he has had diarrhoea which he hasn't been bothered by but also the past few days he has been complaining of tummy ache before and after he wees.
I'm a bit concerned about this tummy pain business. it is very unusual for him to say he has tummy pain.is it related to the diarrhoea or is it likely to be diabetes or coeliac related. any ideas or advice would be gratefully received and i will be taking him to our GP as soon as i can.

I can't think of any way that the problem could be related to diabetes.

Coeliac disease does have both abdominal pain and diarrhoea as possible symptoms

so that might be a possible cause but only if some gluten has inadvertently found its way into your son's diet (perhaps through something like modified food starch in processed foods, which doesn't always shout 'gluten' at people who read food labels).

2 possibilities here:

1) Present symptoms totally unrelated to his Coeliac disease OR diabetes.
2) A complication of either Coeliac disease OR diabetes.

I cannot think of a rational diagnosis of abdominal pain on passing water with diarrhoea, but this need to be monitored.

I agree with Buenchico that it is extreme;y unlikely to be a complication of his diabetes.

Now his Coeliac disease.....a damaged intestine may well let in lactose which your son has reacted to and lactose intolerance is a recognized complication of Coeliac disease.

My bet............Lactose Intolerance.

Thankyou both for your advice.
I'm pretty definite matthew hasn't had any gluten recently (as in the last few weeks)as the only food he has at school, etc is provided by myself...so my instincts are telling me that his diarrhoea isn't coeliac related.
Although this is an semi educated guess as i've not really received much follow up advice since he was diagnosed with coeliac.
He wouldn't be suffering from diarrhoea unless he had a sufficient amount of gluten quite recently would he?...
Matthew says he hasn't had any pain today at all so i'm hoping this was a tummy bug and pain related to that. i will be going to the doc's with him in the next couple of days if pain returns.
Thankyou for the heads up on lactose intolerance . I'll definitely be bearing this in mind.
Jennary...Matthew has a sensible mother and a clear thinker.
