Smelly farm
25 Answers
At the end of the village is a farm that reeks. It is not normal countryside smells - it smells like they are spreading raw sewerage or something (it is truly horrible). What bit of environmental health do bad smells come under as I am going to complain about it? Thanks.

We live on the fringe of Carlisle in Cumbria beside the spot where they were destroying and burning cattle during the foot and mouth incident, it was foul and lasted weeks but we knew what it was. Someone needs to check it out if it's as bad as you say!
Might be pig manure. That is the most potent of all.
Ratter, is that sewage plant still there on the duel carriageway between Barnstaple and Braunton? They used to turn human sewage into fertilising pellets. A farmer in our village used to fertilise his potatoes with it. We could smell that when the wind was in the south west. I would never eat any of that farmer`s produce though!

Slurry spreading, which is what it almost certainly is, is a common farming practice. A live close to the edge of a small town, where the fields are just a few minutes walk away. For a few days each year we have to put up with the smell of slurry and then, when harvesting in under way, we have to put up with the sounds of the combine harvesters working all through the night (because they harvest 24 hours per day, under lights, in order to beat the rains).
It's just part of living in (or near to) the countryside. The people in the Environmental Health department would probably fall about laughing if anyone tried to complain about either the smell or the noise.
