Basically, all false nails will adversely affect the nail plate in some way, but this depends on many factors.
Firstly, if you work in a job where your hands are constantly getting wet or damp ie, hairdressing, then false nails will tend to "lift" quicker. This is because as the natural nail takes up moisture from water, the false nail does not, so there is a push-pull effect against the false nail as the natural nail softens and expands and then dries and contracts. Secondly, if you are harsh on your nails, ie use them as "tools" then the nail underneath will damage. Thirdly, If you pick at any lifting false nail, then you will bring off some natural nail plate with it. Fourthly, If you do not have regular in fills every 2 weeks, then there will start to become an uneven stress on the nail plate, causing lifting. Fifthly, If you have the false nails too long and keep catching them, then the nail underneath will suffer from the repeated bashing. Most importantly, the number one cause of damage to the natural nail is not having the false nails removed in the proper fashion. The proper way of removing false nails, when you think the time is right, is to soak them in acetone. Buff up the natural nail and soak them for ages. The acrylic and gel will eventually melt away. Most people do not do this, they either wait for the nails to come off (aaarrrgghh!) or pick them off!
Remember, false nails are a commitment and need time attention and money to keep them looking good!
As for which nails are best, acrylic are a good all rounder, gel are good if you are not heavy handed ie, a lady of leisure and all other types of nail fit into either of these categories. It's just a matter of what works for you...
Myself, I prefer natural nails using the Jessica Nail System.
