Book Title

I read a book years ago that I would like to read again. I can remember a few features, but one particular one relates to one of the central characters, a man who apparently had a wooden leg, who removed it when he was being chased, and ran normally. Can anyone suggest what book that might have been, please?

In The Third Ppliceman by Flann O'Brien two men with wooden legs (one each!) both remove them, put arms over each others shoulders and run from the police, leaving tracks that look like one man. It's also a fantastic story.
