What's the conventional term used to say "I've cropped the image of this painting, but only slightly"?

Here's an example:

1) The Mona Lisa

2) The Mona Lisa (detail)

3) ...but how do I describe this kind of cut?

I can think of ways to say it, but my question is What would be the conventional term used in the art world. How would they phrase it in a catalogue from an exhibition.

Thanks!

I don't think there would be anything wrong with using the word 'Detail' again (after all anything not showing the whole painting is a detail). The word 'Crop' itself is also quite self-explanatory and acceptable. I can't remember seeing any other word used in art references.

Hi Quizmonkey, yeah you may be right and I see your point when saying that anything not showing the whole painting is in a way a detail. That's how I would feel about it if I were the artist, anyway. Thanks!

Welcome to the Louvre, biddies, Robi says you've all been here before but I haven't. Well in real life I have. She was so small, the Mona Lisa. She was behind glass - but I remember touching the foot of the Venus de Milo. Shouldn't have done that but I was only fifteen and didn't understand about the "gutta cavat lapidem" - how dripping water hollows out the stone, not through force but through persistence, and how pushy tourists hollow out works of art.

Anyway I suppose this means you've already done all the Mona Lisa jokes... (are there any?) ...so I'll just post this rather contemplative image instead. When you've clicked the link click the image itself to enlarge
Hi all...Kit the image came up large on my computer...
just popping back to the old thread to catch up...
...okay back again and caught up. Felicitations for yesterday Robi and I hope you are over the hangover....fantastic birthday weather tho wasn't it...can't stay long today, the ironing is calling...

Wonder why that is, Woofy - mine comes up the size of a book. Yours comes up all over the screen and beyond, so that you can easily see all the tiny little images that constitute the big one?
Do I have to sing ?

Daren't let Mr N know!!

That's weird about the image size Woofy, I don't understand why that is, but at least I just learned a new expression - mousing around! Love it! And love Duffy, Neti. And Nat King Cole, Shaney: "Mona LisAAAAH!"

Just noticed that Vinny is still back at the old thread. I sent him an email along with all the rest of yours so I don't know what else I can do... Maybe if we start some kind of fire the fumes will get his attention?

Neti and Jude, I have not forgotten Marmoset and Maggie but I don't have their email addies and I'm rather counting on you two to let them know, if you think they want to come along again.

Tut yourself Robinia, could you not have helped yourself to my laundry box seeing as I wasn't at home, now I'm gonna have to do it my way - and somehow I suspect your way is better. (I'm just assuming pegging out means to hang laundry outdoors? I may be getting it all wrong, it's the small, ordinary every-day expressions that are the most difficult ones to master.)

BTW dawgs I won that trip to Paris when I was fifteen, and a couple of years later I won a stereo... I'd like to win a camera now but you always have to do it by entering photos, ain't that the irony of life.

probably the searchers

Afternoon, tourists. I've been trying for two days to understand just what it means Neti when you say it's too late to replace the residencia so you'll have to try to do it yourself. I've figured out what a residencia is, it's the latter part of the sentence that eludes me - sounds like you'll be printing your own!? Oh well... maybe we shouldn't dwell on the subject! <How much are they?>

It's so hot here by my window facing south! It's the only place to keep a desk, but I can't think straight. Think I'll follow Shaney's example and hit the streets

or the teve

A residencia is permission to live in Spain. She can replace her's with a piece of paper from Barcelona BUT she would not be eligible for the boat and flight residents discount which is usually half the normal price so she has to apply for it within the Balearic Islands, but she has to be here and get to the Police Station by 5am to be certain to be seen that day. Am just going to ask the Gestor(lawyer type person) if there's anything can be done without her being here! Phew!!!

Hair looks nice I must admit, but cutting took 2 and a half hours as she was very laid back and it was at her home, she cooked her dinner, fed her daughter, I got nipped buy her dog, she swept the floor, and then slowly oh so slowly cut my hair, I was drenched with water spray and couldn't wait to get in my car and get home all for 23 - was it worth it?
afternoon mes amies

phew...intit hooomid? had an hour in the garden in my new pink gardening gloves...nothin' else, just the gloves, hee... can't do much in 'em though with your hands tied together.

well at least that's 4 out of the 20 jobs done....but in the meantime another 4 were added to the list...mmmmm, not looking good is it?

how can a haircut take so long??!! mine takes about 15 mins....whaddyamean it shows?

btw Kit, to peg out (or peg it) can be the washing but it's also informal for to die, haha...as is cark, croak & snuff it
