Word for a skullcap worn by RC clergy, as used by Dumas describing Cardinal Richelieu. My thoughts of biretta or zucchetto don't seem to have the correct italian derivation of cap or small dome. Any help appreciated - thanks!

Calotte? (Chambers defines calotte as plain skullcap as worn by RC clergy)
Other words for skullcap - calot, pileus, yarmulke, calvarium

The official name for a zuchetto is pileolus.I hope that this helps you.

PS. I don't understand. It said on site 'No answers at present" and when I gave mine there were already 2 excellent answers already there.
Pileolus fits the Iatlian derivation given in the question.If it fits the quotation; who knows?
