There's a Nevil Shute book called The Chequer Board which has a very similar theme. One central character is called John Turner, but I can't find a copy of the book to find the name of the man who disappeared and `got religion' in the far east.

Is it definitely WW2? If it was WW1, the description fits Larry Darrell from W. Somerset Maugham's "The Razor's Edge".
