For me, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, The Water Babies, Brothers Grimm and Hans Anderson's fairy tales, and one my lovely friend at church gave me and with which I would never part - Treasures of the Snow by Patricia St John. That friend later became a missionary in Africa and was hacked to death in Zimbabwe.

We were more or less force-fed the Dickens books at school and i recall thinking what stupid names some of the characters and settings had - Dick Swiveller, Mr M'Choakumchild, Dotheboys Hall, etc. It was only later in life that some of the innuendo behind these names became clear to me.

Dickens was clever, Ken. :o)
I also read and loved most of the books mentioned. My other favourites were the Bobby Brewster stories, Just William and the Jennings and Derbyshire books.
I remember reading my sisters Bobbsey Twins books
The Borrowers, The Painted Garden, Aesops Fables, Century of the Surgeon, all the Bobbsey Twins books, all the Mallory Towers books, Heidi, and lots more.
A visit to the library on a Saturday morning and all four books borrowed were read by Sunday afternoon.
I used to believe i wasnt really a book reader but you have reminded me that as a child I had a passion for books - i remember reading all the biggles books and just william series was a bit of a favourite.
A book that fascinated me and one of the few i have read more than once was the little grey men(still have it somewhere) - that one fully captured my imagination.
I remember having most of those already mentioned.
I still have "Tales from the Arabian Nights" which includes "Sinbad the sailor" and "Aladdin", and "Ali Baba and the forty thieves"
Little House on the Prairie. Then when my brother got his driving licence, it was off to the the library about 10 miles away. I then started copying him and read lots of sci-fi.
Because of my eyesight, I had difficulty learning to read...but after surgery at around 8 I went nuts. I borrowed so many books from the school library that they questioned whether I was actually reading them. I was!!
I can't remember details, but we had a set of big hardbacks (maybe 20 or so?) that had 2 books in each - you turned the book around & upside-down to get to the other one. I do recall the "Alice" books were one volume & I've a feeling "Kidnapped / Treasure Island" was another.

I devoured Sherlock Holmes, Enid Blyton, Tove Jansson, Hans Andersen & the Grimms at the library & had mum's huge bookshelf of Agatha Christie, Dennis Wheatley & lots more to read.

I'm sure there are others...
Jennings!
Reading never played a major part in my childhood upbringing and the only books that I ever "browsed" were volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica and Britain's Wonderful Fighting Forces.

I was never "read to" as a child and my childhood was centred around sport, Boy Scouts , "scrumping apples" but never, never reading books.
We also had National Geographic and Readers Digest delivered when I was a child, and many, many Readers Digest hardback Condensed Books. I read all of these avidly from quite an early age.
Question Author
Where did you find apples to scrump in the East End, sqad?
I don’t remember being read to either sqad, to be honest, but can’t remember a time when I couldn’t read myself.
LOL..naomi, I wasn't brought up in the East End, but was educated in Whitechapel as a student.
Question Author
Oh, sorry sqad. I thought you came from Stepney or Bow. Where were you brought up then? Obviously somewhere with apple trees. :o)
Peterborough naomi.

Well, my gaster is utterly flabbered. And there’s me all these years thinking you were a Londoner.
The Tanglewoods Secret :)
I started off with my older sister reading me Noddy books at bedtime.
I used to cry myself to sleep when the Gollies carjacked Noddy in the dark dark wood and stole his car and clothes and left a little pink nude noddy sitting in the middle of the road crying. They lived inside a tree.
There was a rhythm that went' It isn't very good in the dark dark wood,in the middle of the night when it isn't very bright'. All ended happily ever after.
Hurrah the Circus comes to town, All the Blyton Adventure series, Valley, Castle, Sea and the secret seven with lashings of Ginger Beer.
I elevated to Jennings and Derbyshire by Crompton and the creme was all the Biggles books by Capt W.E. Johns
