I need suggestions for the book for my book group's December meeting. We thought I should find a novel with a Christmas theme, but I'm not allowed to pick "A Christmas carol" or "The Greatest Gift". We'd like a modern novel that's easily available in the high street.

To give an idea of what we like, our favourite books this year have been "Time Traveller's Wife" and "The 5 People You Meet in Heaven". Thanks

..how about "little women".. by louisa may alcott...

How about War Game by Michael Foreman-Pavilion Books 1993.
It's about the four young lads joining the army during World War I and their involvement in the football game in no man's land between German and British soldiers on Christmas Day 1914.
I think you'd have to order it though. I can't imagine it filling the shelves 15 years after publication.

Maybe that should read 12 years after publication. Maths is not my strong point. Sorry!!

what about this one... I haven't read it but after reading the review I might just get it.... it seems very lighthearted and topical for this time of year.

Skipping Christmas
John Grisham.

p.s what was 'The five people you meet in heaven' like?
Question Author
The 5 people.... is in a similar vein to It's a Wonderful Life. When you die you meet the 5 people who had the most significant effect on your life, even thoughyou may not have realised at the time. I thought it was beautiful - it made me cry lots, although i was pregnant at the time so may have been a tad more emotional than usual. Great book.
wind in the willows, lovel evocative winter scenes and a beautiful chapter called "dulce domum"
