I have a very poor tape copy of The Hobbit read by Nicol Williamson which I believe was copied from 4 LPs produced by Argo, a subsidiary of Decca. These LPs are unobtainable. Are MP3 files available?

My son recently bought a CD set of The Hobbit in WH Smith, so it is available out there. Not sure about MP3 files.

I expect that you have the Martin Shaw or Rob Inglis readings. I am looking specifically for the Nicol Williams version whic is no longer produced.

There's a few people offering it for sale if you Google (not cheap!), but it looks as if the Tolkien estate has done a pretty good job of forcing the sites that were hosting downloads to remove the material. (Including one that had a disclaimer stating that they would take the files down as soon as the reading was reissued).

Your best bet is probably P2P - not something I normally suggest for anything but TV that isn't yet available elsewhere, but it's probably the only way to get it unless you're feeling very rich.

I think the rarity of the LPs has made them a collectors item, hence the high prices. I do not have the equipment to play LPs. I wish Argo would re-release them on CD. In the absence of this I will try P2P for the first (and probably only) time.

Thanks again

I have good mp3 version of this. I just recorded it.
I was poking around the internet looking for someone to copy (to CD's) my 4 LP's of The Hobbit by Nicol Williamson and ran across your question.

There is a copy on ebay for sale as of this writing.....

I don't typically respond to questions on the internet, but I am a huge fan of this particular rendition of "The Hobbit". I hope that since you posted your original question over 3 yrs ago that you have found a set.

Good Luck, I had a hard time finding this back in the 70's..
I have bought this version on CD off eBay. The link is above & just in case it has gone missing, try this link: http://www.ebay.com.a...L&hash=item1e66665f4a Like all of the other comments - this recording is very dear to me - having adored it as a child. My own children now listen to it. I hope this helps.
