I shouldn't worry so much about sticking to "actual" science. The key is to be consistent within your version of it. Have a think about what you'd like to be possible, decide what's necessary to achieve that, and decide what *still* wouldn't be possible in this new world you create.
But if you want actual scientific inspiration, then there are plenty of books that explore the subject (either fiction or non-fiction) and maybe they'll be richer in ideas that I can be right now. One or two you could read are called "In Search of Schrodinger's Cat" and "Schrodinger's Kittens", both by John Gribbin and both exploring the craziness of Quantum Mechanics from a very readable perspective.
