Can anyone explain the end of this book to me

She is holding on to her husband who is leaning out a window in a storm trying to close the window or something   and then she says she looked anss there was nothing.  Soes this mean he fell?  or there was no love there?  i re read the passage again and again and it still meakes no sense to me.  Thanks

It's a little while since I read it but I thought that there were 2 possible interpretations.

Version 1, she looks at her husband and feels nothing for him. (the pessimistic interpretation)

Version 2, she looks out into the storm and feels no desire to be out there experiencing the wild emotions etc. She is content where she is. (the glass half full interpretation)

Which version seems most accurate to you is dependent on how you believe her character to be - is she good or not? Which behaviour / emotion would make her a good person?

It is ambiguous but deliberately so.

Hope this helps
