For Kindle owners

I am the author of, so far, three books which I have made available for sale on Amazon for Kindle owners. My problem is publicising these books (without a budget to do so). I read various opinions about pricing, free books, etc., and I'm wondering what you, as real readers, think.

I have to be honest. Although I enjoy writing and will continue to do so, I really need to make some money. I'd love to hear what you think about what other authors and readers say about pricing. I have read on forums variously that it is not worth underpricing books as readers are suspicious of books that are too cheap, then there are those readers who don't want to pay too much. Conflicts of opinion, evidently. I am also able to make my books available free occasionally, which I have done intermittently and I get a reasonable take-up. I have had encouraging reviews, but not many of them. One book has had two five star reviews on Amazon.com, the second a four star one on Amazon.com and a two star one on Amazon.co.uk (trying not to sound as if it's sour grapes - difficult I know - the four star one was detailed and literate from someone who had analysed what she read while the two star one sounded like a review of the blurb from someone who hasn't read the book itself).

But a couple of good reviews still doesn't get advertising, which is important. So how do you find new authors, and what do you think about pricing?

I recall listening to a radio 4 interview with an american girl who started off with 50-cent downloads and has gon mega, bu I can't recall her name or find that particular article. Her genre was vampire/fantasy (aren't they all these days)

There does seem to be a big swing towards vampire/fantasy. I'm afraid I'm old fashioned romance!

Thankyou JNO. Whew!! It says romance is the most profitable genre - in both articles - so at least I've started on the right track. Seems I have to start blogging.

maybe the free option on amazon is the best way to start. Sure, you don't get paid for the books you allow to be downmoaded for free, but word of mouth is good, and you never know who is reading them an that will open some doors for you.

actually, I think those articles were written before 50 Shades of Grey, which as I recall started out as self-published fanfiction. So now mummy porn is the most profitable genre. Could you work a dark man with some handcuffs into your plots?

JNO - I'll have to work on that one! I see, however, that 50 Shades has been overtaken by a romance. Maybe there's hope yet.
