I've just reread 1974 and am about to start 1977. What a dark book, so gritty and real and heartbreaking. I couldn't put it down even though it's the 4th time I've read it. Amazing!

I haven't heard of that karen, I have favourites "The riddle of the sands" is a book that I like to read again and again. I'll look out for that one.

I was looking out for alexandered, I'm just about finishing a book about the Battle of Thermopylae called The Gates of Fire (translation of Thermopylae) by Steven Pressfield I know he likes historical novels, he'd enjoy this one.

AYG, you might have seen Redriding on tv earlier in the year (or possibly the end of last year). The programme was based on the Redriding quartet which this is the first part of. It covers a lot of true events in west Yorkshire in the seventies and eighties including the corruption of the west Yorkshire Police and the Yorkshire Ripper investigation. They are very dark and very gritty, but so well written and so realistic.
