I need a holiday book ...

A pacey thriller ... not too heavy ... something to dip in and out of ...

... of the Dean Koontz, Robert Goddard, sort of variety.

Any recommendations, please ?

I have about 10 books on the go at the moment, but none of them is really a "holiday" book. I want something that can live in my backpack for a week.

Heeeelp !!

One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night or Quite Ugly One Morning - Christopher Brookmyre (anything by him really is usually very funny and entertaining).

Filth - Irvin Welsh (You need a really strong stomach for this one but it is good).

Any of the Rhebus series of books by Ian Rankin are pretty good for holiday reading.

Have you read much James Patterson? People who like Koontz tend to like him too... Also pretty good holiday reads.
One Of Us by Michael Marshall Smith?

''A mesmerising thriller from a master of the genre. Hap Thompson has finally found something he can do better than anyone else. And it's legal. Almost. Hap's a REMtemp, working the night hours, having people's anxiety dreams for them. For the first time in his life, Hap's making big money, and that should have been enough. But then Hap is made an offer he just can't refuse: proxying memories instead of dreams. This is not almost illegal - this is illegal in bold with flashing lights. The last thing the cops want are criminals who can pass lie detector tests and Hap knows it, but he's relying on the promise that he won't have to carry anything that relates to a criminal offence. Big mistake. Before he knows what's happening, Hap is locked in a vicious nightmare that threatens to tear his mind and his life apart. And, as in all Michael Marshall Smith novels, that is just the start.
^^^ Second that, I read it in Oz.... Very good.
And I'm still waiting for you to give it back...
I was about to suggest James Patterson as I'm a Dean Koontz fan too. Or Patricia Cornwell. The Kay Scarpetta books are quite good, or Robin Cook does some good thrillers.
Michael Connelly [American] writes good Police or courtroom drama's.

I'm busily checking these all out on Amazon.

But I don't buy from Amazon. If I can find the details and ISBN numbers, I'll see which ones our local bookshop can get in before the end of the week.
Amazon deliver very quickly and you won't have to stress if they don't get them in.

Or just steal books from loved ones, it's what I do....

I know, China ... I just try to support local bookshops.

Well, when I say "local" ... I mostly buy from Daunt Books on Marylebone High St.
Any Val McDermid crime thrillers are good. She wrote the tv series Wire In The Blood.

I wonder whose answer was removed ?
Not too local JJ! (Well it is to me actually so it's good one of us is).

Definitely try a Brookmyre, he's absolutely hillarious.... I have proper LOL moments with his books which used to scare other commuters.
Question Author
It's nice that you live near Daunt's, China ...

It is the best bookshop in London.

Also, it's just round the corner from La Fromagerie, the best cheese shop in London.

And near to The Marylebone pub, on the corner.

I could live near there, if I could ever tear myself away from Brighton (but that's not likely to happpen).
I read Dean Koontz, James Patterson, Kathy Reichs, Stephen King, and Lee Child
I know the pub I believe....I think Marylebone would be out of my price range alas, I'm flat hunting at the moment and so far it's looking likely I'm going back further south.
Question Author
I think Marylebone is out of most people's price ranges, China !!

Maybe we could all club together and buy a penthouse apartment in Wimpole Street, or New Cavendish Street, LOL
I'd be quite up for that!
