does anyone recognise this book?

Evening all.

I'm hoping that one/some of you fantastic ABers out there can help with my search for the title and or author of a book I'm sure I have read and not just imagined.

It is about a young lad (I think) who is deformed and is shunned by everyone and so goes off to live on his own (perhaps in a lighthouse?) and begins painting. If I remember rightly he is befriended by a girl at some point.

I know it's not much to go on but any help would be much appreciated, its driving me nuts!
