Just to let all Bill Bryson fans know that his new book, "Road to Little Dribbling: More notes from a small island "is due out in the autumn. No actual dates as yet. I love Bill Bryson. VERY funny.

Thanks Jan. I really like his books usually funny and informative . Loved Down Under. Will get this ordered for my kindle.
Thanks for posting...will look forward to that.
Me too. Thank you Jan.
The Road to Little Dribbling: Bill Bryson is releasing a new book and I can’t wait http://gu.com/p/46954/stw

The forthcoming book, says publisher Transworld, is the result of a new journey around Britain, and is out this autumn. I am intrigued, not least because its title, The Road to Little Dribbling, reminds me of one of my favourite bits from Notes From a Small Island – Bryson’s observations on English directions...
Great news - looking forward to that. Thanks janbee.
When 'Notes From A Small Island' came out I had it in my head it was some, hyped up, 'middle-class' thing that wouldn't be my cup of tea. (no idea why)
Of course when I did read it years later I loved it and had a lovely big 'back library' to get stuck into.
I haven't read that last one yet but I will.
Thanks janbee...I too am a fan ! I followed part of his journey around America, which he wrote about in "The Lost Continent" This was in 1991, only two years after he wrote the book and everything was exactly as he described it ! I stayed in the same Motels and ate in the same restaurants, and lots of them had photocopied the parts of the book where they featured and had them up on the wall !

I must say, though, that I found his last book " "One Summer" a bit hard going. It was OK if you really, really liked baseball, but it did drag a bit to be honest. Lets hope he is back to form with his new book.
Thanks, janbee. I love Bill Bryson, too. I agree with Mikey; his last few books have been a little hard going. I didn't manage to finish the Shakespeare one. Hope this one is back to form.
I fear that this new book may not paint such a nice picture of our country as the first one. It has changed quite a bit since he wrote that.
I don't think we need to worry too much about this forthcoming book. Bryson is rather too gentle a soul to be nasty.

If you want to read a really acerbic view of Britain, from a fellow American, read Paul Theroux's "The Kingdom by the Sea" published in 1983. But be prepared to be outraged !
Thanks for the warning Mikey but I can get outraged on a regular basis without really trying so I think I'll give Theroux a miss for now but maybe later. I do love Louis Theroux though:-)
Ladybirder. Another of my favourite travel writers, Jonathan Raban, was travelling around Britain at about the same time as Theroux. His book
"Coasting" is well worth the read. In fact, anything by Raban is worth reading.

I am an avid reader of travel books, as you may have observed ! I especially like books about America. A long held favourite of mine is
"Blue Highways" by William Least Heat Moon. Similar in many respects to "The Lost Continent"...enjoy !
Mikey there are so many wonderful books to read and not enough time to read them all. You seem to be a very busy man I don't know where you get the time.
I don't suppose Bryson will be complaining about immigrants?
Bill Bryson is always worth reading. I know him from his 'Malham wave' days and called in on his family in New England when I was there. He's a good bloke and a good writer. (For those interested, his eldest son was a member of the athletics club in which I coached and Bill used to hang around and chat whilst picking him up - so I got to know him.)
Bryson was for a brief time chancellor of my alma mater, Durham, long after I had left. He was very popular.
He's hilarious. Will look out for that -thank you xx
Wasn't he the litter tsar for Tony Blair at one time?
Love Bill Bryson I've got several of his books I read The Lost Continent every year!
Nice bit of one upmanship there, jourdain. We might be reading about you one day. I hope he's kind to you. ;)
