Angels's Ashes

I have just finished Angela's Ashes and what a good read it is !
( or maybe 'tis ! )

I nearly dropped out half way through, as it was getting decidedly miserable but I am glad I stayed the course, as there is a lot of homour in it as well. McCourt himself proves to be quite a determined character, not easily put off his dreams of going back to New York. God knows he went through a lot of trials and tribulations in the process.

But why is it called Angela's Ashes ? I know that his mother was called Angela but why Ashes ? She is still alive at the end of the book after all.
