looking for book title

i am looking for the name of a book .It has three main characters one of whom is Rusty a rogue from London who sets up a labratory for the alchemist who sets out to create gold , and a brothel for the female character after a battle they split up but are reunited in New York a nice wee story but cannot remember the name of this novel please help thank you
