Actually King Canute (or Cnud as he is sometimes known) did not believe he could control the tides. He was certainly not insane and was well aware he could not. His episode on the beach (which may be merely apocryphal) was aimed at demonstrating to his courtiers the limitations on the power of kings.

In some respects there is a remarkable similarity between this and the virus problem. It seems a widespread fallacy that this virus can somehow be controlled, suppressed or even eliminated. Whilst it may be suppressed for a while and its spread reduced, it cannot ultimately be controlled. We need a King Canute now to demonstrate to the "scientists" the limitations on the powers of governments (or, in the case of the UK, those signing Statutory Instruments introducing ever increasing restrictions). They will not stop the virus spreading.

Seems right to me to try and stem it til the vacine is ready. If there is no sign of working vacine in 6 months then maybe rethink and consider let it run more free. Weve had 1 million deaths on the planet in 6 months . A think we oughta try control it to keep it to well below that in next 6 months rather than just let it do it's worst.

King Canute wasn't insane, SK. He knew he couldn't turn back the tide but he went through the motions in order to prove to his courtiers that there is a limit to a king's power. Just saying :-)

Sounds horrendous. Except that in that time, a little shy of 30 million people will have died from all causes. In the UK, more than 75% of Covid deaths have been among those over 75. Another 14% were those aged between 65 and 74. Many of the older victims had other health problems and may have died at any time with or from anything. Whilst 41,000 died in the UK in the last six months from or with Covid, another 300,000 or so died from other causes. Cancer, cardiovascular disease and (at the moment) summer 'flu with pneumonia are causing far, far more deaths than Covid. That last category alone is causing about five times as many deaths. There is now increasing evidence that the neglect by the NHS of other diseases is likely to have an impact far greater than Covid will (unless one takes heed of the ludicrously apocalyptic forecasts - or scenarios or whatever they are called - presented by Prof. Whitty.

The country needs to wake up. In particular its politicians should be allowed to debate whether they are happy to see anything but Coronavirus neglected by the NHS and whether they are happy to see the other damage (economic and social) that is being wreaked on the country by these increasingly bizarre restrictions.

You can rest assured that there won't be. And even if there was, the likelihood of a significant proportion of the population receiving it in a reasonable timeframe is very low. The doors to doctors' surgeries are closed and seem likely to remain so until the virus disappears. So whatever you do, don't get ill (unless you catch Covid, that is).
