It seems that there are many parents and children in the UK for whom compulsory schooling is (at best) a nuisance.

I suggest that compulsory school attendance is scrapped and each child is simply given the right (but not the obligation) to access up to 10 years of schooling - to be taken by the age of 18.

This would :

1. Introduce many parents to the concept that they actually have to spend some time bringing up their progeny - rather than merely creating them and expecting the rest of us to look after the fruit of their loins for 15 years (or more).

2. Save many millions (billions?) of pounds - which could be used to restore free University education for that part of the population (15%?) for whom it actually makes some sense

3. Ensure that schools stop being holding camps for the disaffected and become instead temples of learning for students who actually want to be there

Dave, I take it you don't have children and therefore haven't spend endless hours overseeing loads of home work both at primary and grammar. No not doing it for them but explaining and getting them to redo it when wrong!
Oh bliss, Dave.....bliss......to be teaching pupils who want to be there.... to have parents sending their children to learn....not to be baby sat.....

And then to have free University education......

My dream....♥
I had a brilliant idea once, Dave.....but my school wouldn't take it up....

We confiscated all the Family Allowance books....and appointed a part time person to be in charge of them......job creation...see?

Then....if at the end of the week your child had behaved well, concentrated in lessons and smiled lots you could have your token to cash at the post office....

If your child hadn't......the school got the money...☺
I have the utmost respect for teachers and for some university lecturers. I have never thought of them as babysitters!
1 isn't fair on parents. Schools seem to forget sometimes whose children they are. It's my responsibility to decide what's best for them
2 how many children would make it to university if their parents didn't happen to be interested?
3 make it more relevant and interesting...
Exactly, psybbo....
...on both posts...
Psybs......we were there to be in charge of some pupils from 9 until 3.30.

Some parents didn't give a damn what we did with them as long as they weren't under their feet....sad, but a fact...x
Ah, teachers...
Where's Tilly ?.
I tell you what.....today has taught me that if you've never worked in a school and you are a decent parent you aren't aware of some of the problems schools have to deal with......

I've been chased along the corridor and up a flight of stairs by a crazy mum shouting.....I pay your wages and you'll do as me and my son wants!....Lord he was a little humbug.....☺
Resting if she's been working, Tony....

Evening, Shoota...x
Er, correct.
My daughter was a bit of a nightmare for a while. The school did put up with much more from her than I would ever have expected them to...
You'd need a ? for me to be miffed, Shoota......☺
And Daisy ?.
Gness, I've met some inspirational teachers and the odd lecturer as well, also one religious freak who fortunately was let go.
Er, give me time ?
21:56 shoots x
Thanks Pixel, I knew you'd satisfy me...
Well, of course... ;-)
