Fancying something sweet, I had a rummage in the fridge. At the back I found a crime brûlée.
I put the sugar on it and put it under the grill.
I ate it, it was delicious but....
I have just noticed the sell by date.
It was 5.12.2013!!
I new I'd had it a while but horrified I was so old. Didn't taste wrong. It was in a small glass dish sealed with tinfoil.
Am I going to be up all night?

I can't recall ever hearing of anyone who has contracted food poisoning from dairy products. If they taste OK they're almost certainly safe to eat.

The other day I found a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream - unopened - at the back of the cupboard, expiry date 2011. I've had a couple of glasses with no ill-effects.

Blasted iPad, I typed creme.
You have nothing to fear. Sell by dates are designed to make you throw away perfectly good food and buy something else. Your nose is able to sniff out trouble. Things like fresh meat and fish ca deteriorate and smell will tell you no. I have eaten yogurt months after best before and it's fine.
