Baked a lovely light fruit cake, left it cool. No idea where they came from but it was crawling with little minute ants half and hour later.

Where have they been lurking? Cake number two is now in the oven, worktop bleached to within an inch of its life, ant spray bought.

I didn't swear. How have you wasted your time today?

What colour are they?

Black, teeny tiny things
Reading some of the same old same old posts put on day after day by certain people in the News Section. In future if the posts by them continue I will give it a miss. Boring and repetitive. Yawn.
Handy if you wanted to make ant arctic roll though.
Another fruitless trip into town on a search for undies/sleepwear/shoes/lightweight trousers that appeal *and* are available in my size...doesn't exist.
I can get very grumpy...
Keep your eyes on cake two whilst it's cooling. Watch and see where the ants are coming from. Then put some Nippon on a copper coin and place it on the pathway.

Why a copper coin Tilly

Thanks tilly, good tip.

Pasta, that's why we prefer to shop online. I have an ancient vacuum cleaner and wouldn't know where to start to look for replacement filters in my area. Quick and easy online.

eva, I very rarely venture in to News, I don't have a steel helmet.
Barry, I have just got bored with the constant harping on about the same old thing. I will take your advice and give it a miss. On the subject of ants - I cool my baking on the top of the wardrobe as I had a similar problem with ants that you are having. I still put bread/cakes up on the wardrobe to cool - Habit!!
It's easier to throw away an old penny than a two pound coin, Margo. :-)
Couldn't you put it under a mesh food cover - lots of different types on the dreaded Amazon
Oh gawd Tilly - thought there was a special significance to copper - DOH
Margo - that is good idea - never thought of that! DOH - Will see if i can get one with tiny wee holes - too small for ants. Thanks
There's too much dust on the top of my wardrobes. No way would I put a cooling cake up there!
We used to buy 'Ant Hotels' in France (masses & masses of ants everywhere in the countryside). You can probably buy them here. Small, circular containers with 'doors' you pushed open. Ants would troop in, get covered with powder and take it back to the nest - where it finished them all off.
Until you can find some to put around the place, cover everything!
Evadora has a good idea there.
Are you available for hire, barry?

The anticipation mounts - I might have put some gaffer tape, sticky side up, as an exclusion zone around the cooling cake area.
Tilly - since I retired I have started cleaning more, including the top of the wardrobes!! Otherwise I would sit about being bored all day (live rural and do not drive) so have to rely on the occassional bus that we get here.
pasta, wardrobe tops are too near the spiders' favourite haunt of ceilings in the country...
Tilly, not pasta ^ soz.
Evadora, for some reason I have difficulty posting links from Amazon but there are literally loads on there in dirrerent shapes and sizes. My Great Aunt Lalla always covered her baking in them as back in the old days she didn't have a fridge just a pantry with a cold slab
