My mum has been living with my partner for the past 15 years, whilst they were together he bought a house (14 years ago) but it is in his name only and he pays the mortgage. My mum fell pregnant 14 years ago when he bought the house, since then she has been working part time whilst bringing up their child (my half brother)
I know she is not entitled to any sale of the house-but seeing as she has lived with her for so long is she not entitled to anything at all? He has just decided that he no longer loves her any more and wants her to move out after 15 years, although she has nowhere else to go and only earns £300 per month. My brother now 14 would have to go with her as he works all the time and is never home. I dont want to sound greedy but it seems so unfair that she made a home with him for all those years, cooked cleaned and bought all the food that he can just throw her out, although i understand he paid the mortgage
Just to be clear, your mum is not married to her partner?
If they are not married, then this could be tricky. She should see a solicitor specialising in family law. Even though your mother may not be entitled under the law to anything, her partner must pay maintenance for your brother as he is a minor.
I thinks he would be entitled to something as he clearly never contributed to living expenses... And had she not been there he would have had to. She needs legal advise really. Someone else may be able to help better than me! Good luck
They lived together for 15 years. I doubt if he could dump her without a penny, particularly as they have a young child. As others have said, she needs to see a lawyer.
As she has shared the household expenses and brought up his child I think she may well be entitled to something. As has been advised by others she should stay put and seek legal advice, initially from Citizens Advice as it won't cost her anything.
I'm afraid that unless some sort of agreement was made regarding sharing the property it is very unlikely your mother will be able to make any claim to it or receive any payment (beyond child maintenance) from her ex.
if she [ the mother in question] only earns £300 how on earth can she afford a solicitor let only one that specialises in family law ? it is extremely difficult to get legal aid nowadays. She deserves something for all her care etc
