Whenever there is a blackberry bush in fruit I notice that there are red berries that grow along with the blackeberries. These berries are also quite hard to the touch unlike the blackberries which are soft. What are these red berries?

They could be redcurrants
Do you mean on a separate plant? If so hawthorn would be my first choice. Obviously blackberries start out hard and red before they ripen.
In this day and age, even plants have to be politically correct.

I favour prudie's answer.
Sounds like unripe blackberries :)
As above, the red berries will turn into blackberries.

How come they are so far behind the blackberries, some of them are far larger than already ripened berries.
I reckon they are unripe blackberries, if they look just like blackberries but are red. They ripen in waves so there is plenty for us to pick each week. The bush up the road still has a lot of immature green ones, too.
If they are single berries on different bushes then they could be hawthorn berries or rosehips.
I was looking for the info but can't find it. IIRC a mite gets into the individual drupes and stops them ripening. They go red but stay hard and never go black and soft.

So, between boxtops and woofgang we've got two very different answers. Are they both correct, only one correct or none of the above?
I have a garden full of blackberries, they ripen in waves, I have been picking them for weeks, pick all the black ones, two or three days later there are loads more to pick.
