My daughter and grandson (aged 2yrs) has moved virtually next door to us...and I want to get a dog. Had staffies all my life but wife has ruled that out. Anyone know how spaniels are with young kids? Thanks

Actually the police breed very few of their own dogs and buy most of them in from - gasp- breeders! The same comment goes for Cavaliers, if people buy a puppy from a breeder that does not test for Syringomyelia then they cannot complain if they get a problem. My own breed has an eye problem which we have now got a DNA test for, so it should be bred out in the next couple of generations. However, we still have some people who refuse to test their dogs or make the results known, so if anyone buys one without having done their homework they could end up with a problem. The bottom line is to go through a breed club and find out what is required in any breed and only buy from a reputable breeder recommended by a club.

I would have a guess at saying molly knows very little about dog breeding, but jut watched the programme about KC that was on last year!

And to add, molly, you are chatting a load of b0ll0x really re pedigree dogs!
I have just had to rehome both a mongrel and a Pedigree, and both were equally loveable and gorgeous, with my pedigree having no more problems then my mongrel did!

Also, rehoming a dog is not always a possibility or what someone will want to do when young children are involved as you do not always know the full history. Didnt think of that one before spouting your waffle did you!?

You are now showing your total ignorance of genetics. If you mate a carrier to a clear
you cannot get any affected dogs, but it means the gene pool will not be too restricted.
If you do this for a couple of generations there will be enough clear offspring to produce totally clear dogs. This does not mean there will be any more affected dogs, unless people mate carrier to carrier or use affecteds, which of course some people might still do if they are unscrupulous.

Exactly and then there will be more cruelty, and some diseases are on the dominant gene, which means you only need one for a dog to be diseased, but then your still breedign diseased dogs, with the healthy ones. what wil lbe done with them, they'll probably end up being put down, just because someone wants a perfect dog so they get get a ribbon.
