Rough Collie problems

We have a female rough collie who is 14 years, very good tempered ,eats well, drinks well and all he toilet habits are in order.
During the day she spends most of her time asleep , we do however have a walk around the village.
The problem occurs at night when she goes to her bed she starts pawing for a while and then starts a high pitched moan which in turn goes into a very loud screaming session ,this is over 5 minutes by which time I stopped her ,this is getting to be something of pain and very stressing for us all
Does anyone have any idea what this could be ,we would be grateful for your help , we have spoken to our vet ,who cannot t shed any light on the problem.

Well,she's an old lady isn't she? Maybe dementia is setting in.Perhaps instinctively she knows her time is near.But whatever the reason she's given you 14 years of pleasure and companionship and the least you can do is give her some of your time and love in her time of need.After all,five minutes of strokes and reassuring words is a small price to pay for a member of the family isn't it? do you think she is lonely at night try leaving her a radio on and giving her a jumper or something that smells of you to sleep with they do get senile at this age as paul says ,where does she sleep during the day could she not sleep there at night ,perhaps she is cold at night does she needs a coat for the winter nights, our old lab used to have a coat on for the nights in winter ,hope you get this sorted ruthxx

Bless her, she is an old girl, and perhaps gets anxious at being left at night, could you leave her a night light on?

Some vets are prescribing these tablets for older dogs, so may be worth a try.......

I am very grateful for your replies ,She loves being outdoors and is very annoyed when she has to come in ,as it has been so cold we have made sure that she is in much earlier but last night it was milder resulting in prolonging her stay outside.I should point out that our collie is indoors night times and sleeps in the front room where her bed is and normally has company untill the early hours,
I sat beside her when she was starting to be distressed last night ,stroking her etc, the response was very good ,resulting in a much better night for us all ,

If she is no in pain or discomfort it sounds like it has become an attention seeking habit. Also if she were anxious about something stroking and calming her would reinforce this behaviour. how long have you let her whine for ? does she eventually calm down if you ignore her

thank you for your response ,the longest that we were able to leave her was 5 minutes and then it was because the noise was incredible , it sounded like screaming`.
