When I cleared out my garden shed this spring I found a pile of empty snail shells in a corner. All had neat hole in the shell from where I guess they were attacked and disposed of. Any ideas what is doing this? What ever it is it is very welcome in my snail infested garden and I would like to encourage it.

Hedgehog?
il est moi!!
You may not want to hear this, but Rats eat snails too... by punching a small hole in the shell and sucking them out ;o(
Rats also pile the shells up.

I'd say rats.
We had a problem with rats a few years ago....but no snails! When the rats went the snails came back....... So I'd have to say rats too!!!

Rats were my first thought....i get loads of piles of snail shells under big piles of straw where i cover up the gunnera in the garden...and it's almost certainly rats.
Do you still want to encourage it?????

Well, it only seems to use my shed in winter and if it stays out of the house and eats my snails I can live with it. I've not seen any rat poo anywhere or any other sign of them. And hopefully the cats will put them off coming any closer to the house.
