The sad passing of Desert Orchid, made me wonder who were in everyones top five favorits of all time?

Mine

1 Red Rum
2 Arkole
3 Desert Orchid
4 Best Mate
5 Benn Nevis

Oh and if I could spell it and have 6 Najinski

Horses for courses! Technically Arkle, but you can't beat Desert Orchid for popularity. Also Red Rum did so much for the sport, Best Mate was another good un and also See More Business. And you can't leave out One Man.

Crisp, Sea Pigeon, the list is endless but you can never top Dessie.

Isn't it strange that most of those picked are jumpers?

If I had to pick flat horses I would say Never Say Die - Lester Piggott's first Derby Winner in 1954. Blakeney and Morston were also favourites of mine - even before I lived in Norfolk.

And if I am allowed a 'foreigner' - Allez France!

On the flat, I'd go for "Attraction" only because she's half sister to my horse who has never raced (too small), but I do watch her progress.

Can you imagine a modern day Eclipse though?

The bookies would refuse to offer odds after the first 5 or 6 races , the jockey club would force him to be retired!

Right again Jake, but would'nt it be great to get in on those first 5/6 races. I'd retire and perhaps buy a race horse!!!!!

but for me pharlap was and still is the greatest horse of all time. god bless dessie though i was sad to hear of his death i'm glad he had a very happy retirement unlike so many racehorses.
