To get rid of mice, you need to go to an agricultural supplier and get Sorexa CD this is a specific mouse killer, don't buy rat killer coz they work in different ways and not as effective, DONT BE TIGHT with the stuff you are buying it to do a job so don't try being economical and saving a bit for another time, you need at least an egg cup full per site and depending on the extent of the infestation you will need to bait a minimum of six sites to be effective first time. Place baits in dark corners and around edges and walls where you think the mouse is travelling.

You should have them all nailed in a week, if they eat all the poison, replace it.

Forget about smells etc, just follow my advice.

I am a Pest Control Officer

Remember this is poison, it will kill anything or anybody that eats it!!! put it out the way of pets and children and wildlife!!
But doesn't this mean that they all run off and die under the floorboards thus rotting to bits and stenching away?
I had a Pest Control Officer tell me the best way to catch mice was use old skool traps, baited with bacon rind.
Mind you, the best thing I ever found to get rid of mice was a cat. Mice smell cats and know to stay away. And if the odd one comes in, the cat'll get it, no problem.
Buy a humane trrap that catches them alive take them a ride in the car must be over a mile away fron your house and release They love chocolate
And do it quick cos they breed like, er, rabbits..
Get a cat!
Getting a cat does not work!!
I treat sometimes 5 houses a day for mouse infestations about 50% of these people have cats.
The problem with cats is they usually start the problem in the first place, they catch mice outdoors and then bring them in alive to play with them, its unfortunate that most catflaps are in the kitchen door, so the cat brings the mouse in doors put it on the floor to play with it and the mouse shoots off under the fridge/cooker/cupboard etc, now if this mouse is pregnant you have the beginnings of a big problem.

Mouse traps are OK but you need to put down a few and keep monitoring them, they are best baited with peanut butter, they love it and cant run away with it, which happens with cheese, chocolate etc. nothing is as effective as well placed mouse poison!!

Yes it does happen that on occasions you will get a mouse die under a floor, this however does not happen very often.

Good luck
