puppy rasping noises in throat

16:15 on Thu 27/Jul/06 hi my 6 mnth old min pin puppy keps making a rasping (not choking or sicky sound) noise every so often.he acts like theres something stuck in his throat.this is accompanied by sneezing.hes only been doind this the last week .he does it when i go to take him out.im wondering if he has an allergy or hayfever.i cant see anything in his throat at all and he doesnt get distressed.hes eating and drinking and going to the toilet as usual also.he fine in himself.i bought him a new collar and put that on him a week ago so could it be anything to do with that.ive now changed the collar back again.hes still rasping although not as much i dont think.im taking him to the vet tomorrow but if anyone has any ideas id be grateful!! thanks xxx

(20:50 on Thu 27/Jul/06) Could be kennel cough. When my three dogs had it they all had different symptoms, but they all sounded like they had a sore throat. Some honey may soothe his throat until tomorrow, if he will have it!

I am sure your vet will find out though!

(21:19 on Thu 27/Jul/06) My dog i had used to always do that just make a real loud rasp noise every so often and then sneeze and shake his head, noone ever knew what it was but we always thought it was possibly hayfever or asthma (if dogs can get that im not sure). But yeah take him down the vets to check it out just to be on the safe side :)

(21:39 on Thu 27/Jul/06) Could be something we call 'reverse sneezing', If he does it, hold your hand over the end of his nose so he has to breath through his mouth and it should clear it with a sort of snort.

Some dogs do this when they get excited.

Best to get the vet to check in case it is kennel cough, antibotics will clear it up if it is. Doubt very much if it is a sort of hay fever, if dogs get allergies it is usually seen in their skin, rather thank as in humans with sneezing fits.

thanks for your help guys,it does sound like a sneeze now you say that,sort of 5 in a row type of thing.would he appear ill or lethargic if it was kennel cough or just normal as he is?he seems fine apart from these sneezing fits.where do they get kennel cough from?i dont know of any dogs hes been in contact with to have any illnesses,or could he pick it up from grass in the park?hes had all his jabs but do they cover kennel cough...i got them done at the vets.

(01:04 on Fri 28/Jul/06) Kennel cough can be airborn or you can bring it home on your clothes. It can be picked up direct from other dogs and it is so called because in a kennel situation it can go right through and affect all the animals very quickly. The incubation period is about ten days and usually they recover quite quickly with antibiotics. Very young and very old dogs are most at risk, and although there are vaccines these usually only last for about 6 months and are not given as a matter of course you have to have them done as an extra.

Some kennels will not allow you in without them, and others won't let your dog in within two weeks of being jabbed for it, as they use a live vaccine which in effect gives them kennel cough which they can pass onto others until the vaccine has taken effect.

It sounds like they have got something stuck in their throat and they are trying to clear it. Benylin cough mixture can help soothe their sore throats until it passes.

(13:56 on Fri 28/Jul/06) i have had 5 dogs and they have all done this from a young age from time to time. I dont know what it is and when it first happens its quite alarming but it just seems to be a natural thing they do---dont worry. I still have 4 dogs-all adult and they all do this strange "wheezing/choking" sound now again...

(15:15 on Fri 28/Jul/06) Hey Lankeela. Just wanted you to know that my staffie has grass allergy and his reaction is sneezing fits (so much so that snot comes flying out) and eyes streaming. Exactly like his mummy. So dogs can react like humans.
But I agree it also shows in the skin as my other staffie has storage mite allergy and her skin is very patchy
