cats on holiday

we have a static caravan and have taken our cat with us for weekends and kept her inside during this time.We are hoping to take her with us for three weeks instead of putting her in the cattery.Because of the length of time there ideally we do not want to keep her cooped up and wondered if it would be acceptable to let her out or do we run the risk of losing her.Has anybody been in a similar situation?

We have relatives who took their two cats for a fortnight's holiday to their static caravan which is stationed on a farm. The cats were absolutely fine and within 48 hours were roaming around quite happily and returning when they were called. As your cat is already quite familiar with your caravan, I'd be tempted to risk it and let her outside whenever you are around. If the weather is as hot as it is now, she might be distressed at being cooped up in inside for3 weeks unless the caravan has good ventilation. Am sure if you plan your first 2 or 3 days to be around outside to give her confidence she will get used to her new external surroundings and it will probably be far less stressful than leaving er locked up in a cattery wondering why she's been deserted. Presumably she will be able to shelter under the caravan if it rains or she wants somewhere cool to rest?

I don't think that I would let her out. Cats are small and living in a static caravan shouldn't matter. I woudn't want you to lose your cat. If you are staying for a long time then the safest way to allow her outside is to keep her in for at least 2 weeks and then go out with her for 3 days and bring her back in when you come in. After that you can let her go out and in at will. Keep in mind that many cats live in apartments and small condos and never go outside. Right now my project cat is living in 2 rooms in my house so that I can monitor his kidney function and weight. Good luck with what you decide to do.

We used to take our cat on holiday with us when I was a child, just because we couldn't get anyone to look after it. We did it 2-3 times, I think, to both a static caravan and a holiday cottage. The cat was fine, didn't wander far, and always came back when called. We didn't do anything special other than try to watch it and keep calling it back for the first day or so.

I think a lot would depend upon your cat; is it a big wanderer or never goes far from home?

I wouldn't let mine out personally becuase i would be too scared of losing them but if you do decide to do it why not try at feed times first so they come back for dinner or try feeding them just outside. Good luck!!

Why not put her on a lead for the first few days and take her for a walk? let her get to know outside of the caravan 1st with you.
