I'd like to buy some plants but they need to be safe for cats to munch on and quite hardy cos I haven't got a very good track record with plants, especially with the cats eating them too! Any ideas?

Dieffenbachia (Leopard plant) and all lilies are poisonous to cats. My cats like the spider plant and other "grassy" type plants, but tend to eat a bit then yak it up on the carpet.

Here is a comprehensive list of cat-safe houseplants:

You should really discurrage (sp?) cats from eating plants. They should only really eat grass, cos as frlinechums said, they eat it a throw it up. They do this on purpose so if you discurrage them from eating your house palnts then there wont be cat sick in your home only outside. I have a house full of different plants and one of my cats always try to eat them, but i tell her off in a firm voice as i dont want to come home one day with half-dead plants cos she's taken a fancy to them.

@Kelly: Cats are quite smart in their own little ways...

Mine know they are not allowed on the table, I hardly ever catch them, but I see the paw prints on the table cloth, when I get home.

I also hardly ever see them eating the plants, but I can see, they are chewed up and the furry one leaves enough evidence behind for me to tell where she's been.

They know what NO means, but when you are not looking, they do whatever they want anyway...

But to answer the question: Mine like the spider plant, too, and I've had that for many many years, which is a miracle looking at how often I forget to water my plants...

My kitties are exactly the same Bohne, i know they get up to all sorts when i'm out at work, so I just want to make sure that if they start eating the plants while I'm out they'll come to no harm. Little monsters!

Kelley when I go plant shopping I'll get them some cat grass to nibble on as they are house cats at the moment. How are your kitties? I remember you gave me some advice on whether to get a boy or a girl kitten as a buddy for my first cat, I had a different name back then!!

Mine are the opposite, I am convinced that they spend the whole time I am out asleep peacefully. then spend the whole time I am in / asleep climbing the walls, eating the plants, running, fighting and falling off the kitchen roof!!
Why not buy some pot plants especially for them to chew? Cats enjoy chewing grass so a pot of grass seed plantednear floor level would improve their digestion once the grass had grown and I'm sure they'd love a small pot of cat nip (a herb which most cats go wild over). Avoid lillies at all costs as they are very poisonous to cats. .
Is it safe for cats to eat cat nip - maybe a daft question as it's a herb, but just wondered if it was good for them or not?
