My girls are getting a ginger kitten for Christmas (I've seen her and she's adorable) and I would like some ideas for a name. My elder daughter is crazy about Boudicca and the Iceni and there is no way I intend standing at my kitchen door, screaming,
'Boudicca! Here, Boudicca!'
I'd be strait jacketed before I could paint myself in woad. Please help because I need to be armed with great alternatives.
One last point. I'd always assumed it was genetically impossible for a ginger cat to be female. Where did that myth come from??

Marmalade?

Garfield?

You might have thought that as tortoiseshell cats, (from ginger and black cats), can only be female as the colour gene is carried on the X chromosome!

I think I actually prefer Smudge to Marmalade, especially as this kitten has colouring on its lip that looks like smudged lippie.
No offence Smudge!! :-)
Thank you Drusilla - My username is after our beloved cat Smudge who we had for 13 wonderful years! She was a beautiful Russian Blue & we still miss her very much.
my mate had a cat called "Dave"

Zingiber is the latin name for the ginger-root plant

Jaune is yellow in french - if you anglicize the ZH sound into a J it could be Joan... or Joan Dark (Jeanne d'Arc) if you daughter wants another heroine

Amarillo (double L = Y) is yellow in spanish, orange is Anaranjada (j = H)

But remember, whatever you name it, you need only call Here Kitty Kitty, and it will come... or not, same as if you call its name.

Ginny Dundee.Ginny for short!!Ginny,a vatiation on ginger, and Dundee for make of marmalade!

Let us know what you finally decide on as an alternative to Boudicca!! and have a very happy christmas too.

Sorry, for vatiation,read variation!!

Hi, In A Pickle. She is very light ginger in most places with quite a bit of white, particularly on her tummy. Her ears are a darker ginger, as is the marking around her mouth and she has slightly darker ginger striping interspersed with the larger areas of light ginger. I would have thought she was a tortoiseshell, if she wasn't just ginger and white. Maybe, she is still a tortioiseshell?
I always had dogs as a youngster and don't really know much about cat varieties. I'm just glad I won't get lumbered with walkies!
Have a lovely Christmas In a Pickle and thank you for always being so sweet to me on AB. I appreciate your kindness.
Spice (Ginger Spice!)

Hi Drusilla...We have two lovely tortoise shell kittens...one called Smudge(thanks Smudge) and on called fluffy t-shirt (named by my 4 yr old).

But the best name for a cat I've every heard was on one of the kids TV programmes...It was called Mousey Tounge..lol
