Clean Green Corrosion/leakage From Batteries

I have an old Walkman and in the battery compartment on the contact there is green corrosion ?? If that is the correct term. How do I remove it. Would acetone help. I don't want to damage the contact. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Gently rub the connections with some fine steel wool. Be careful not to get any in the works.
I had similar problem with some Christmas decorations, sorted it by carefully scraping terminal with my penknife.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Have not yet attempted the cleaning. When I do will use something from all the replies. "A bit of this and a bit of that".
