I boiled a ham shank today and I threw off the first boiled water but jeepers creepers am I thirsty - I can't stop drinking so much water.

I have opened a tin of grapefruit to be with me as I retire for the night.

Never again will I do another ham. Mind you it was lovely and tasty - had a ham bap and home made veggie soup for dinner

They vary so much don' they, I try to soak in cold for a day changing water often before the first simmer.

Tis tasty though.
My Dad used to cook boiled hams with mashed potato, little carrots and parsley sauce when I was a kid, I loved it :)

How can it be "not worth it for one" when you can divide it into portions and freeze it. That's what I'd do.
As ham is salt-cured I do what Mamya does. Give it a good soak overnight in cold water to get rid of the salt. I don't boil them though, I roast them.
Its rare that you get them that need soaking first.
I always pre taste then soak if required.
But I boil and roast - I find it gives a better taste.
Grapefruit juice? Drink of the devil.
