in the book Northern Lights the Gyptians speak a mixture of two languages; English and one other ? I have googled and can't find the other language, would be grateful for help. Thanks

no these are people in the book nomads and this is a question from a times competition I have found the other answers and was told on arts a literature its a flat language.
sorry obviously i totally misunderstood the question, slapped wrists i think!
That fits with the information on the site I suggested above.
One site has an encyclopedia entry for gyptians - A nomadic group of waterfarers who live on canal boats and travel to Oxford for the spring and autumn fairs.
They show great resemblance to the Dutch of our world. Most of the Gyptians have Dutch names and the waterflood in 1953 is also mentioned in The Golden Compass/Northern Lights.

So the other language could be dutch

I had a look in the book, and it talks about "Fen-Dutch". It claims that people in the Fens were influenced by people from Holland who built the canals, and as a consequence use a Dutch-like language called Fen-Dutch.
