I keep seeing horror stories in the news and heart rending charity adverts and I can't help thinking that there is no need at all to breed dogs there are plenty already. Charities neuter all their dogs for good reason yet low life scum are negating that effort by senseless breeding.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with responsible breeders making an income from selling puppies.

I agree that there are many people who are breeding unhealthy dogs and have no idea about genetics. Also people seem willing to pay far too much money for 'designer' mutts - we used to call them mutts or cross-breeds. (I can't spell mongrols/mongrel).

I adopted a five-year-old Lab/GSD who still had all his bits. We got on beautifully from the start. He was not trustworthy with anyone else. He lived here for nine years.

Only if horse, (I can see the bloodstock INDUSTRY holding still for that one!) alpaca, donkey, guinea pig, rabbit, cat, and so on breeding for profit is also illegal.......actually no I don't think even then. I am hoping that the new laws on breeding dogs will do some good....I do think that all breeders should be licenced but how (or whether) that will be policed is another matter.......additionally its fairly easy to "not" make a profit from breeding dogs which would make a nonsense of the law.
With most things in business, more licensing tends to place extra burdens on honest people while making absolutely no difference to dishonest people. Often, the extra burden translates to extra cost for the buyer, which makes the dishonest seller even more attractive.
It should be licensed (free) and made an offence to breed for profit without a licence.
good point ellipsis and it happens now both in dog breeding and in shady "rescue" operations who bulk ship puppies to the uk who are bred for sale but are shipped here as 'rescues"
danny I think it should be made an offence to breed at all without a licence and I further think that all costs of licencing and inspection should be paid for by the licence fee. I accept that accidents do happen but it shouldn't be too hard to operate a policy of "one allowable accident" to cover those people who genuinely do have that as an excuse.
as I have said already though, appropriate law is not the issue. As with so many other things, its the enforcement that gives the problem.
There are responsible breeders but the other side of the coin are unscrupulous sickos Who care nothing about dogs welfare, I bring your attention to British bulldogs, once a fine symbol of a fine dog, the other day I saw one, front legs looked twisted, eyes pointing in different directions and it’s underbite looked horribley painful. The poor thing looked like it had entered the teleportation device (on the movie The Fly)
With a mutated bullfrog
If people only went to reputable breeders contacted via breed clubs and made sure the parents had undergone any necessary health checks, saw the puppies with the mother and made sure they visited them more than once if possible then there would be no market for the overpriced unhealthy pups often imported from Eastern Europe, or bred in Irish or Welsh puppy farms and shipped en masse to dealers who then advertise on sites like gumtree,pets4homes, preloved etc. Trouble is people decide they want a dog and want it now, without even as much thought as they would give to buying a new phone. As long as people create the demand these 'greeders' will supply it.
I agree lankeela BUT also so long as some, not all, Breed Societies support the breeding of ever more deformed or disabled animals in the name of "breed standard", even avoiding back yard breeders and puppy importers masquerading as rescues won't be enough.
I have stated before on this site that dog breeding should cease! There are enough dogs to go around, crying out for homes in dog shelters up and down the country. Backyard breeding is a big problem and until laws become stricter on this vile issue, it will sadly continue. And the argument that some people may want a special breed and not a poor mongrel rescue holds no water with me. A dog is a dog is a dog ....
Totally agree with 'hereiam' at 14:50 today.
Out of interest, is there much free educational material available for dog buyers and dog breeders?

I ask because perhaps more people (buyers and breeders) would do the right thing if they knew what the right thing was. I once knew some very financially and intellectually challenged dog owners who thought breeding for profit was a good idea. They weren't nasty, just completely clueless, penniless and thick. Knowing a good resource to point them to, even if it persuaded them not to become breeders in their circumstances, would have been useful.
I worry that the demand for certain dog breeds have increased as they have become almost a fashion accessory....either the over bred tiny dogs that are dressed up like small childrens dollies are and whose paws rarely touch the ground ( often lodged in people's armpits thus are known as armpit dogs....do they smell of people's armpits? one wonders) and the large aggressive types of dog that seem to be a different type of fashion accessory for men trying to prove their masculinity... these seem to be bred by people who just want profit at any cost to the dogs involved....the answer? Dog licenses for breeders as well as owners...maybe ..
That's good thanks lankeela. They're all good for buyers.

Is there anything for prospective breeders such as the ones I described? This page is for buyers but could be adapted to be read from the breeder's POV:
