National Park has been deliberately shot at with a bow and arrow and hours later when that hadn't killed him he was shot and killed by an American dentist. The killing itself is bad enough but the repercussions for Cecil's offspring are dire.

I find it strange that game rangers, guides, wild life film makers etc etc are frowned upon if they terminate a wild animals life, no matter how cruel and harsh the circumstances - that the way it is in the bush, let nature take it's course etc, etc. Yet a hunter can pay a shedload of money to kill for a trophy and interfere with the status quo in an area and, in this...

Oh get off your high horse, I meant hunters who hunt for 'sport', obviously !! //

I get moaned at regularly for C/p'ing the original post to which I am replying - but this illustrates why - I have trawled back through the tread, but I am not sure to which of retrocop's posts you are replying - a c/p would have made it clear.

Just a thought.
Petition up to over 300,000 now - keep it up folks ...
I love animals very much - my two closest family members are cats. I am also a meat eater.

I have to accept that hunting happens and is, usually, legal. The animal should not suffer unduly. Cecil's death was not quick and not pain free and it was, according to the media, illegal. All involved should be punished by the judicial system.

But the whole thing seems to be becoming a witch hunt, vigilantes style justice is not an acceptable way for people to act.

Cecil was a handsome looking lad, I really hope that something good comes of it all.

Ladybirder - any cubs that Cecil sired will be culled and that is quite a distressing thought.

@andy-hughes

You may, occasionally, get moaned at for "over-quoting", i.e. pasting back a long post which is only a short scroll further up the current page and then only adding a one-sentence quip.

You only need to quote enough of the post to clarify what prompted your response.

e.g.

@andy-hughes
//I think the focus should be, not on the fact that the lion killed was 'well known', but that any animal is killed in this way - that is true horror of the story.//

Hear, hear!

Incidentally, I have been seeing anti-canned hunting posts on Twitter for the past couple of months. Pretty much prescient, relative to this incident.

On AB? It's not been raised as an issue (or not such that I noticed).

We have only handfuls of lefties here; only now do we get to see how many animal rights types are here. Fortunately, it cuts across all party loyalties. Something we can all unite to work against.

There is now an online petition demanding justice if anyone is interested in signing - I just did and they have already 1/3 of a million signatories;

Thanks for the link. Signed. Now standing at 390,000+

I find it strange that game rangers, guides, wild life film makers etc etc are frowned upon if they terminate a wild animals life, no matter how cruel and harsh the circumstances - that the way it is in the bush, let nature take it's course etc, etc. Yet a hunter can pay a shedload of money to kill for a trophy and interfere with the status quo in an area and, in this case, sign the death warrant for Cecils cubs.
It's not that strange rsvp - money is involved.

There is very very little in this world that you cannot get if the money is right.
390,000 + BRILLIANT !
Wasn't being literal Andy -H it's just an expression I use.
@Ladybirder

So, why do they do it? If you will excuse the frivolousness:

1. "Hey! Everyone! Look! I can hit something as big as a door from 100 yards away!"

(I think the Piers Morgan piece says he can, in fact, hit a playing card at 100 yards. If true, why can't he stop at making that the brag?)

2. "Hey, ladies! I've got so much money, I can tour the world and splash out the price of a fancy car on getting a wall trophy".

3. "God created all the animals on earth for us to do with as we please."

4. "I'm an American and I can do whatever the **** I like and no one can stop me because they are poor and need my money."

Is there a way to sign the petition without submitting my home address?

...I'm a yank...but do not care to be painted with the " stupid brainless twit" brush,thank you very much. Just sayin'.
^Yes, the home address isn't necessary
I really feel sorry for this brave, intrepid, adventurer's wife and kids, if he has any. Just imagine the abuse his kids would have to take if school wasn't out for the Summer.

Hopefully, if he has children stuey, they will realise that what their father does is not something to which they should aspire. I'm guessing they are brought up in a home and environment where killing wild animals is normal behaviour. Might come as a shock to them that everyone does not take their view and might make them think before following in their father's footsteps. Unfortunately they could get caught up in this because of his behaviour as you say.
The whole thing makes me feel sick and the photos are terrible. I thought we'd advanced a bit since the days when Prince Philip went big-game shooting. This dentist seems to make a habit of it. :(

Hypo @ 16.24 - your words are too close for comfort, sadly.
rsvp @16.16 - good point you make there. Makes a nonsense of the non intervention policy doesn't it.
Been busy all day so shall watch the news in a mo to catch up.
Thank you for the link, Khandro. I have signed the petition and put it on my facebook page.

Thanks for the link stuey, just read it. The anger doesn't seem to be diminishing - the opposite in fact. Good.

Difficult choice but I've given rsvp BA.
rsvp, as I am not sure what you mean by " I find it strange that game rangers, guides, wild life film makers etc etc are frowned upon if they terminate a wild animals life, no matter how cruel and harsh the circumstances - that the way it is in the bush, let nature take it's course etc, etc. " could you give me an example please ? - ie I cannot understand why anyone wishing to end an animal's suffering would be frowned upon by anyone other than a sadist.
