Hi ferrari, When we rehomed a cat we were told to keep him for at least 2 wks.   :-)

This is different for each cat - basically until they recognise your house as their home and are comfortable in your presence and will come to you for food etc.  Some cats, especially if they are very timid, find it difficult to settle and may use take their first sniff of the outdoors as an opportunity to ****** off.

My cat's lying slumped against me. I've been drinking, don;t know what she's been up to! It was about a month before i let my two outdoors, and probably 6-8 weeks before they would go out without me in the garden with them. Poor wee things were so jumpy, the older sister still prefers me being out with them.
You should keep him in for two weeks and then folow him into the garden for a hour or two a day and then let him rome!!!
