Is it true there are no snakes in New Zealand?

I was watching River Monster last night and the presenter said that there are not any snakes in New Zealand, which I find very hard to believe. Maybe I misunderstood him.

Thanks in advance

As far as I know it's true
It is true. There are none in Ireland either.
But there are sea snakes in all waters surrounding New Zealand... "The yellow-bellied sea snake - Pelamis platura. Niwa principal scientist Malcolm Francis said the snake lived in the open sea and travelled with surface ocean currents. " They are highly poisonous, but rarely bite humans...
St. Patrick banished all snakes from Ireland; or so legend says.

Ron.
samuel l jackson ensures no snakes ever reach New Zealand.
there were no freshwater fish until they were introduced by Europeans.
As far as I know before man accidentally and intentionally introduced various mammals into New Zealand, the only native land mammals were two species of native bats.

The odd small one sometimes comes within a container but they're either detected by MAF or die of a lonely old age in the wild.
