I know that there are no snakes in Ireland but whilst I was there my dog was bitten by something.. His leg swelled up a lot and he was limping on it for the whole of yesterday, he also looked generally unwell. This morning he seemed fine and the swelling has gone down a great deal but now I can see two deep puncture marks on his ankle, the marks are about an inch apart and it certainly look like a bite mark, so what could have done this?? I can only imagine a snake or large spider making punctures this acurate and large (of course I will take him to the vet if he continues to have problems)
I don't know if you meant Northen Ireland but, There are six species of reptiles native to the UK: adders (also known as vipers), grass snakes, smooth snakes, sand lizards, common lizards and slow worms. Dry heathlands are the best natural habitats for British reptiles, but semi-natural areas with heath-like conditions such as railway embankments, sea walls, road verges, churchyards, golf courses and almost any area with a sunny south facing slope and open vegetation may be suitable.
Native to the UK - with the exception of Northern Ireland! The only reptile found in Ireland is the viviparous lizard, which is found in various dry habitats. :)
If the swelling and bite marks don't go down then the only thing I suggest is to take it to the vets and get it checked out there and hopefully they will be able to treat it !!!
