well you shouldn't use human toothpaste as the ingredients may not agree with the dog. You can get dog paste which some dogs may like and therefore may cooperate better. DONT use bicarb or salt!!

When my vet suggested that one of my cats would benefit from having it's teeth brushed, they supplied me with an apparently meaty flavoured paste which was meant for dogs.

Has anyone ever tried to get a cat to have it's teeth brushed !!!

Aren't there crunchy biscuits designed to "clean" dog's teeth, in the same way that some cat biscuit manufacturer's claim that their product does the job ?

To Wolfgag and Gilli...Thankyou. Maggs
My poor dog has just had 7 teeth out recently and I now clean his teeth after every meal (ok. horse and stable door etc).  The vet sold me this, it's chicken flavour and after the initial surprise at my attack on his person, he now quite likes it and opens his mouth for me for his oral hygiene. Good Luck.   Word of warning its expensive four times as much as our toothpaste.
Whoops just read my answer, it reads like I am cleaning the vet's teeth.    Can I clear it up, its the dog.

Thank you, Ember.   I do hope your Vet was young and handsome......I must give my vet another look to see if he is worth paying an arm and a leg for a tiny tube of doggy toothpaste!   I was given a bag of tooth cleaning dog food, but Chrissy is so small, she would choke on the huge blobs of what looks like hard toffee.  I even tried breaking them up, but she just sniffed and looked at me with disdain.     I am just using a soft brush and water at the moment and it seems to be doing a good job.    Thanks again to everyone who replied.  Maggs
