Just had something horrid in the living room.

About an inch long and very thin. Black head, yellow legs and a yellow band on its black body that went into a point. Think it may be a type of wasp but not sure what type. It didn't look like a common wasp or hornet. Any ideas?

No, it wasn't one of those cupid. I've only ever seen one of these before (that was yesterday and one of my chickens killed it).
Google black and yellow flying insect there's quite a few to found there.

Oh, I've seen that. That's a Eurapean hornet. They are somewhat common where I live but not very. They are nocturnal but sometimes are out in the day.
it sounds like a Horntail or sometimes known as a wood wasp
Uggghhh that's vile - hope I never get one in my house !!!
