we are about to have a new cat that is 8 years old. do yo have to keep them inside for a certain amount of time so that they get used to their surroundings?

As the new lodger is 8 years old I think you should consider about two weeks to three,you have to be careful incase she/he decides to roam back to where they came from.Good luck with your new [boss]lol
I agree-two weeks should be fine.
Persoally I would give it a bit longer ( but then I am paranoid )4-6 weeks for me. Good luck to you and your new puddycat may you enjoy many more happy years together.
