A Labrador of any colour is short coated while a Retriever is med-long coated, I always thought that it was Golden Retriever and yellow Labrador, but I may be wrong.
The two are different breeds - the Golden Retriever, which is a golden colour, and the Labrador Retriever (commonly just Labrador), which can be yellow, brown or black.
Technically Labrador Retrievers come in three colours, yellow, black or liver/chocolate. Yellow however can range from light cream to red fox.

Golden Retrievers can be any shade of gold or cream.

The coat of a Golden Retriever is flat or wavy on the body with feathering on the ears, legs and tail. The Labrador has a short, harsh coat, with no feathering.
