We are expecting our first child and have a pet budgie. As we live in a small house, are there any allergy risks for the new baby and if so, how can they be managed?

as with all animals poo is the big problem, lots of bird owners give their birds free reign over a certain room to let them stretch their wings for at least a couple of hours a day, with a young baby this highly unadvisable, just ask Kim and Aggie. Excuse the spelling but bird poo has the sometimes deadly campylobacter in it this bacteria causes more food poisoning than any other. Wash your hands lots..
Budgies are relatively harmless. They only do small poo's and I doubt any would get in contact with a baby. I have a budgie and a cockatiel who live together. There is more problems with cockatiels because they give off a lot of dust from their feathers but with budgies you do not get this problem. Keep the cage clean and keep the babies hands off the cage I would say. I have always lived with budgies since I was a small child and they give so much pleasure to a house always singing away. Your baby will love it and probably keep it amused when it is old enough and maybe stop it crying for attention occasionally because it will have something to watch.
